Family Room Inspiration

I love the calming effect of neutrals, but I don't like beige or tan. They make me feel like I am in a dungeon for some reason. For the family room, I have decided that the color scheme will be cream, white, brown and blue. Currently in our family room we have brown leather hand me down couches, coffee table and end table via my parents. We also have a cheapo TV stand, 3 cream picture frames and a blue mirror I painted. We certainly are on a budget, but I have had a fun time on Pintrest coming up with inspiration for the room!

Shutters on the windows, but in white.

Love these window treatments

I am debating between curtains and shutters. I want white curtains because I love the clean, but carefree feeling white curtains give a room. I am not sure if they would be a disaster with little kid hands. Maybe white shutters would do the trick, however they are more expensive. I love this lady's home. She seems to make white work. What do you think?

Home Owner Adventures Part 2: A Contract on a House

We finally have a contract on a house and it is exactly what we were looking for! The process was so much more tedious than I anticipated. WE. SAW. A. LOT. OF. HOUSES. I mean, a lot! We visited houses that had floors peeling up, mold in the utility room, 3 bedrooms when the house was advertised at 4 and houses that had backyards that were non existent. Homes around here also were flying off the market! We toured a home that had been on the market for 2 days. As we were leaving the house the listing agent arrived declared that the house had just been sold!

We made an offer on 2 houses.

House #1:
  • It was about $8,000 over budget
  • 2400 square feet
  • 2 story, 4 bedrooms and 2.5 baths with a large playroom (basements don't exist around here)
  • Large backyard
  • Real wood floors along with some stained carpet
  • It also had an air conditioned bonus room attached to the garage
  • It was located right off of a busy road
  • Zoned to good schools
House # 2:
  • The listed price was the top of our budget (but still within budget)
  • 2100 square feet
  • 1 story, 4 bedrooms and 2 baths with a decent sized room to use as a playroom
  • Nice laminate wood, tile and carpet floors throughout the house
  • Acceptable sized backyard, but large grassy space in front of the house and park nearby
  • Good neighborhood with kids playing everywhere on the day we went to tour it
  • Zoned to good schools
  • The seller is an older lady who kept the house in perfect condition (it seriously looks like a model home)
The offer on the first house didn't go through. They wanted more money, which would have made it close to $10,000 over budget. We just couldn't do it, so we didn't. The appraisal on the 2nd house came in $10,000 lower then we offered. I was afraid we were going to lose the house, but the seller agreed to lower the price by $10,000. So now we are $10,000 under our budget! Much nicer payments. If all goes well, it seems we will be closing on house #2 on December 9th!

Without further ado:

The Family Room

The Kitchen and Breakfast Area

Formal Living Area (we will turn it into a playroom)

Formal Dining Area (we will turn it into a study)

Master Bedroom

The Backyard Patio

I love the layout, the size and the crown molding. I don't mind the cream colored walls. Cannot stand the counter tops! I am so excited to put our furniture in this house and make it our own. Stay tuned for my decorating inspiration.

Happy Fall

Some fall decorating finally got done! Although I am not overly proud of my cake stand display..
My biggest project was a wreath I made.

I bought 3 little wreaths from the Dollar Tree for $1 each.
Then I took them apart and twisted them together to create one larger wreath.
A friend of mine's mom worked at a furniture store that was closing down. So she gave us a lot of fabric samples for free.

I cut out 1 small flower and one slightly bigger one, along with a smaller circle. Then glued them all together.
Then we bought a wooden letter for $1.50 at Hobby Lobby.
What have you done to decorate for fall?

When to Buy Cheap, and When Not To

There comes a time when every family needs new furniture for one reason or another. Either they are just starting out, or they have hand-me-downs that are getting a little too gross. Well when we moved into our first apartment some items were given to us by family and friends ( like our couches) and others we had to purchase ourselves.

We made some great purchases, and some not so great ones. I, of course, would love to help prevent you from making some of the same mistakes we made.

We didn't have very much money to put towards new furniture, but we needed to get the piles of clothes off the floor and into a dresser. We also needed a place to eat our meals that wasn't the floor of the living room. We didn't want to go into any debt doing it.

We bought the most awesome table and 6 chairs ever off of craigs list for $100. An older couple had decided they wanted the RV lifestyle, so they wanted to get rid of most of their belongings. They were moving out the next day, so we got a great deal! The table and chairs are solid wood and in great condition.

Then we decided to find a dresser. We went to IKEA. We hadn't heard much about their furniture, except that it was a pretty good deal and you had to put it together yourselves. We spent $250 on a red dresser, that looks really nice. But is by far one of the worst purchases I have ever made. The bottom of the individual dressers are made out of particle board, so they can hold almost no weight. In IKEAs defense, we also bought night stands there that have held up very well. The particle board in those is surprisingly much thicker, despite the fact that it needs to hold a lot less weight then a dresser.
Our horrible dresser
The thin particle board
Clothes shooting out the bottom of the dresser

My take away from this experience is this:
  • You should buy good quality furniture, that is durable and will last long. Otherwise it is money down the drain, when it doesn't hold up!
  • This rule is valid even when there are children in the mix. Don't think that you shouldn't buy nice things because children will ruin them, it's just the opposite. You should buy quality items, so they can withstand children.
  •  If you can find quality, inexpensive furniture second hand don't pass up the opportunity even it has a few dings in it. It is a lot less money to refinish a table or a dresser then to buy a new one.
  • Always be safe when buying second hand, especially off of websites like craigs list. I talked to a few potential sellers on the phone, that I just didn't get a good feeling from. So we decided to opt out of those purchases. The couple we ended up buying our table from ended up living right down the street from the house I grew up in, although I had never met them.
  • If you don't find a great opportunity right away, give it some time. For example, use large plastic bins to hold your clothes, until the right deal comes your way. In the end this will save you money and time! In our case it would have saved us $250, plus the hassle of buying a dresser 2x!
What is your experience buying second hand, or would you prefer to buy brand new items?

Children's Art Gallery

My daughter's room was starting to look a little bare as soon as we upgraded her to a big girl bed. Then I realized thats because she did not have ONE SINGLE THING on her walls in her room.

Then I realized my kitchen was covered from top to bottom in her art work. So I solved two problems in one!

I bought 5 solid wood frames from good will for $9. I took out the glass and painted them white.

Then I bought some rolled up cork for $8, with a 40% off coupon from hobby lobby. I ironed out the cork (yes with an iron), cut it to fit the frames and glued it to the backing of the frames.

After letting it dry, I displayed some of the art work with push pins.
